How to use the word generator
Pick a list, press New word and start rapping before you think about it. The whole point is to give your brain a subject faster than it can talk you out of one.
- Choose a list. Things to rap about gives you objects and places, like coffee, sneakers or a subway. Everyday gives you short, common words. Rap gives you words from the culture, like flow, crown and hustle. Multisyllable gives you longer words, like power and better, that rhyme across two sounds.
- Choose how many. One word is a topic. Three or five words make a challenge: fit them all into eight bars.
- Press New word and rap four to eight bars about whatever comes up.
- Open the rhymes or the game. Every word in Recent words links to its rhymes, and the practice button opens the game with that word loaded, so you can rap it on a beat straight away.
Three drills with random words
Random words train the one skill a freestyle needs most: turning any subject into a line on beat. These three drills build that skill in order, from one word you can plan around to words that arrive while you’re already rapping.
One word, eight bars
Take one word and rap eight bars about it without stopping. Set a beat around 85 to 90 BPM and press New word. If you get “umbrella”, talk about rain, about forgetting one, about the one that flipped inside out. The goal is to come back to the word in bar eight, so the verse feels like it was about something. One word gives you a topic, which is the hardest thing to invent under pressure.
A new word every few bars
Turn on Drop words on a beat and steer your verse to each new word as it lands. The generator plays a beat and shows a fresh word every 2, 4 or 8 bars. Start with a new word every 8 bars, then shorten it to 4, then 2. The trick is the bridge line: when the word changes, say one line that connects the old subject to the new one, and keep the rhythm going. Freestylers do exactly this when a crowd shouts words at them.
Rhyme the word on beat four
Make the random word your rhyme and land it on the fourth beat. Instead of rapping about the word, end a bar with it. If you get “phone”, you need a line that ends there:
Been waiting all day for the call on my phone
Then answer it with a rhyme on the next bar, like home, alone or zone. Looking up the word’s rhymes first makes this drill much easier at the start.
Freestyle words list
If you’d rather read than click, here are 48 words that are easy to rap about, from the same lists the generator uses.
| Things to rap about | Everyday | Rap | Multisyllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| coffee | day | flow | power |
| sneakers | night | beat | better |
| rain | time | mic | never |
| subway | free | rhyme | money |
| pizza | know | game | over |
| ocean | call | crown | little |
| mirror | plan | cash | other |
| phone | car | crew | after |
| candle | love | hustle | father |
| thunder | try | pressure | coming |
| moon | true | city | talking |
| skateboard | spot | stage | looking |
Each everyday word above starts a big rhyme family. “Day” alone rhymes with play, way, say, stay and okay, which is why those words make easy rhymes on beat four.
