A bar in rap is one measure of the beat, four beats long, and most rappers fit one line of lyrics into each bar. A standard verse is 16 bars and a hook is usually 8. People also say a rapper “has bars” when the lines are clever, which is slang and has nothing to do with length.

This page covers both meanings. It starts with what a bar is and settles the “one line or two” argument. Then it shows you how to count bars on any beat and how long a verse lasts at different tempos.

What is a bar in rap?

A bar is a unit of musical time. In the 4/4 time that almost all hip-hop uses, one bar holds four beats, and you count it “one, two, three, four”. Musicians also call a bar a measure. Rappers use the word to talk about lyrics, because one line usually fills one bar.

Here’s a single bar, with the words that fall on the beats in bold:

Count it to four and you land on the door

“Count” lands on beat one, “four” on two, “land” on three and “door” on four. Four stressed words, four beats, and the rhyme sits on beat four. When you write lyrics, you’re really filling bars. When you rap a 16-bar verse, you’re filling sixteen of those four-beat boxes.

How many lines are in a bar?

A bar is measured in beats, not lines, so one line usually equals one bar, but a fast line can fill two bars and two short lines can share one. That’s why people online argue about it: they’re counting lyrics on paper while the beat counts time.

Picture a rapper who doubles up, squeezing a long line into double time. That one written line might cover two bars of the beat. Or picture a hook with short call-and-response lines, “Say it loud / say it proud”, where two lines fit inside a single bar. Both are normal.

So when someone asks for “16 bars”, they mean sixteen bars of the beat, roughly 40 to 50 seconds at an average tempo. They don’t mean sixteen lines in your notebook. Count the beat and you’ll never be confused.

How do you count bars on a beat?

You count the snare: it usually hits on beats two and four, so every second snare closes a bar. Once you can hear the snare, counting bars is just counting to four over and over.

  1. Find the snare and the kick. The kick is the low thump, usually on beat one. The snare is the sharp hit on two and four.
  2. Count beats, then bars. Say “one, two, three, four”, then hold up one finger. Repeat. Each finger is a bar.
  3. Listen for changes every four bars. Producers often add or drop a sound at bar 1, 5, 9 and 13. Those changes help you keep your place in a 16.
  4. Let something count for you. In the game, the ball bounces four times per bar and each rhyme word marks the end of one, so you can see the bars go by.

If you lose count, wait for the next big change in the beat, usually a new sound or a drum fill. It’s almost always the start of a new four-bar group. If you want more beat-counting drills, how to rap on beat walks through them.

How many bars are in a verse, a hook and an intro?

Most rap songs use 16-bar verses and 8-bar hooks, though nothing forces you to. These numbers are habits that make songs easy to follow, not rules.

PartUsual lengthNotes
Verse16 bars8, 12, 24 and 32 bars also show up
Hook (chorus)8 barsSometimes 4, or 16 with a repeat
Intro4 to 8 barsOften just the beat, no vocal
Bridge4 to 8 barsA change of feel before the last hook
Outro4 to 8 barsThe beat fades or stops

A verse can be 12 bars. A chorus can be 16. Short verses keep a song moving, and long ones show off. If you’re writing for someone else, ask how many bars they want before you start. The four-bar blocks inside a verse also line up with how rhyme schemes group lines.

How long is 16 bars?

Sixteen bars take about 30 to 60 seconds, depending on the tempo of the beat. You can work out the exact time with one formula:

Seconds = bars × 4 × 60 ÷ BPM

BPM means beats per minute. Here’s what that gives you for a 16-bar verse at common tempos:

TempoOne bar16 bars
70 BPM3.4 seconds55 seconds
80 BPM3.0 seconds48 seconds
90 BPM2.7 seconds43 seconds
100 BPM2.4 seconds38 seconds
140 BPM1.7 seconds27 seconds

One catch: trap beats are often listed at around 140 BPM but feel like half that, because the snare hits once per bar instead of twice. Rappers count those beats at half speed, which doubles the length of each bar. So a “16” over a 140 BPM trap beat can last close to a minute. If you want to hear the difference, free beats by BPM lets you set any tempo from 70 to 160.

What does “bars” mean as slang?

When someone says a rapper “has bars”, or shouts “that’s bars”, they mean the lines are clever, not that the verse is long. In slang, bars are lyrics with skill in them: a sharp rhyme, a smart double meaning or a punchline that lands.

“Spitting bars” means rapping well. A “bar” on its own can be one great line, as in “that last bar was crazy”. The slang grew out of the music meaning, since a bar is where a line lives, but it judges quality instead of counting time.

The two meanings meet in battles. A battle rapper might get 16 bars per round, and the crowd judges how many of them are actually bars. If that’s where you’re headed, here’s how battle punchlines are built.

Practice counting bars in the game

The game counts for you: the ball bounces four times per bar and a round ends at 8, 16 or 32 bars. Set the length to 16 and say one line every time the ball goes around. By the end you’ll have rapped a full verse and felt exactly how long it is. Then try 32, and keep a freestyle practice plan going from there.

Bars in rap FAQ

What is 32 bars in rap? It’s either a long verse or two 16-bar verses back to back. Some rappers do 32-bar verses to show stamina. At 90 BPM, 32 bars last about 85 seconds.

Why does my DAW show 32 bars for a 16-bar verse? Your music software counts the beat at the tempo it was set to. If the beat was made at double speed, every bar you hear as one takes up two in the software. The verse hasn’t changed, only the count.

How many bars is a rap song? A common layout is three 16-bar verses with an 8-bar hook between them, plus a short intro and outro. That adds up to around 80 to 90 bars, or about three and a half to four minutes at 90 BPM.
